more than meets the eye

Today in the office I held up three resumes for Robert to look at - without even glancing at the credits, he asked to see the pictures - and just like that, "no, no, and...no." Through laughter I realized he was actually serious, he did not want to ask them in because he did not like their look. It is so amazing to me you could be extremely talented but not even be asked in for an interview beacuse of your "look."

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but we all do it - think about it literally - when you are in a book shop glancing through the aisles, what draws your attention - it certainly isn't the riveting description on page 53 of chapter 7 - it is the cover artwork, the title, the size and feel of the book. It makes me wonder how in a world so caught up in outer appearances - in how other people precieve them - we ever find a way to feel good about ourselves. And the problem is, a lot of people don't - heck, I am certainly on that list from time to time as we all are. Laura said to me the other day that if all people were simply more secure in who they were and truly loved themselves there would be a lot less shit in this world, and in a lot of ways I think she is right.

Beyond this realization, my day was pretty slow. As the holiday season quickly approaches, there is not nearly as much to do. However, we do have some current castings for our clients scheduled in the upcoming week that are very promising. Some of the more notable ones are Sponge Bob the musical (seriously though- are they kidding? A MUSICAL....ugh...how anyone could think that making a score out of "He lives in a pineapple under the sea," is beyond me...) Fame, The Lion King (a final recall for our new client Olivia for the part of Nala - but he funny thing is she speaks like three words of English! However, her voice is so incredible that they keep asking her back), Never Forget, Up Against the Wall recall, Eastenders (a big television show here - like Grey's Anatomy big), National, Wuthering Heights and the musical -Chicago. These shows are big names and so we are looking forward to hearing back from the directors in the next couple of weeks and seeing if our clients have been recalled or even cast.

Unfortunately, we got a call from Carla who we worked with on Monday for her audition for Fame, and while she sang really well, she did not get the impression that the directors were excited about her performance. We do not have the definite results, but usually this means she did not get the job. There is so much disappointment and setbacks in this profession that you must have a positive attitude, a strong sense of self and a real passion, otherwise it would be much too difficult to deal with all the rejection. She was so cute and excited, so I felt really bad for her.

This morning we had an interview with a middle-aged man, with salt and pepper hair - very cute for an older man - not quite McSteamy, but still cute. The funny thing is he is clearly older than Robert and Gordon. This was an interesting dynamic for them seeing as the actor has technically been in the business longer than Robert. Rob is supposed to feel in the position of authority, but afterward he was like - that felt weird. But he handled the interview well, asking many questions about the actor’s background and credits. The prospective client was very comfortable – almost too comfortable and a little smug about how good he was, but his credits alone make him a worthy candidate for representation - he was Band of Brothers and tons of other TV shows, and Robert is planning on signing him. We also need a male client in his age bracket, so he fulfils that current void.

For the rest of that day, I organized a bunch of the youth client scripts that were in a big pile so that we could easily access them when needed. I continued organizing the web site content, reviewing other youth client web pages, and deciding how we wanted to design and structure ours.

I didn't go to the youth workshop tonight beacuse there was a mandatory Elon meeting about safety - we have been having some issues, but I think it will be okay, and that is all I will say as to not make my mom worry :).

Overall, it was a much lighter Wednesday in the office, which is really nice because I was able to get some school work done too, YAY! Checking stuff off the list....

So I guess my anecdote of the day is take a second glance before you judge someone - totally sappy, I know, but it is so true! This is a business, so it is a bit different, but in life look beyond the headshot, and check out the resume... you never know what you might find :)

Love and hugs,
Jenny
