Monumental moments sometimes slip through the cracks of routine, everyday life – or perhaps the fact that one is miles away or even an ocean away. Moments of historical significance take a back seat to a truly insignificant class scheduling crisis, a long day at work, or a friend not being what you need her to be. It is easy to lose sight of the big picture when you have tunnel vision – even if it happens to be a masterpiece, its essence is lost in the darkness of your narrow sight. Today, my country – our country – elected the first African American president, and this is first moment all day I have actually reflected on the significance of this in our history. In the quiet of my room, with the day behind me, I can now fully appreciate how proud I am to be an American and hopeful I am for change. This day, a day I treated ordinary until now, is a day that declared a new chapter for our nation and for the world. Whether you support Obama or not - whether this was a brilliant victory or a tragedy for our nation in your eyes – no one can deny that our country has taken a step forward – a step I hope to find is in the right direction.
So what did this day entail for me – work, work, work! It was a pretty productive day at the agency. Wednesday's are always very busy for me because it is workshop preparation day, and I spent most of the morning searching for scripts in monologue books, typing up the dialogue, printing and organizing the scenes for the students and getting commercial scenarios devised and divided. I have to admit, I am getting really tired of the monotony of it all, but there is nothing really substantial to sink my teeth into right now with the office being so quiet.
After lunch and a meeting with one of Robert and Gordon's actor friends who are off on injury (and enjoying a hazelnut hot chocolate in a CHRISTMAS starbucks cup…ah that time is here J ), I had ten new CV’s to create for new youth clients that came to the agency through The School of Comedy – how many times have you heard about doing CV’s? I know – a million! I know this is my job, but I am ready for something fresh. Everyday it is the same old thing, and I know I am paying my dues, but it is a bit draining. Anyways, The School of Comedy is a school (shocker…) that created a spin off television show that some of our children will be heavily featured in. This is a very exciting opportunity for the children to get experience in the business, as well as exposure to casting directors who will tune into the program looking for fresh talent – which means this is also really great for Rob and the company.
Once I finished creating their CV’s, I wrote a press release about the new clients to be sent out to casting directors, who are encouraged to attend the classes to preview the kids before the show goes on air. I felt as though I did not get a lot of direction with the press release – at times Robert is not very clear as to what he wants included. Not to mention, he completely forgot that I had already written the press release he was asking me to write two weeks ago, which caused some confusion. After attempting the first draft, I handed it off to Gordon to be checked, and he made a lot of changes, which was fine, but a bit frustrating but Gordon was clearer on what we were tying to say, and I guess I was not. I love them and I love my internship – don’t get me wrong – I just think we are all in a slump with the economy being crap, and that is evident in the daily activity – or lack there of.
Robert and I also discussed getting a webpage developed for the youth clients, which I am going to work to develop, with the help of my brilliant mom who rocks at that stuff. We will be organizing the content in the upcoming weeks, and hopefully have it up and running before I leave. I also went about getting in touch with some of the contacts I have made for quotes for the research paper I have to write to receive credit. I am getting a lot of great feedback, which will be very helpful when writing my paper. This also made me realize how fortunate I am to have these contacts to help me out in cases such as this. It illuminated for me how influential this internship has been and will continue to be in my life in the future.
The workshop was very successful tonight – and always hilarious. All the content I prepared was used, and we had a special guest director come to observe the kids, which always keeps them on their game – he is a good friend of Rob and Gordon’s and I love him, so it was great to have him there. I am really getting to know the kids strengths and weaknesses, which was evident to me as I went through the client list explaining each child and what roles I think they would be suitable for. Again, I have come so far already as to my knowledge of the business and our clients, which makes me proud. Also, since we are going to Ireland this weekend and we have a client in the show, “Blues Brothers” showing in Dublin, Rob got me two tickets, which will be great J. I am excited about Ireland, even though it is supposed to rain. But I also feel like I have a lot on my plate right now, so the weekend home would have been nice too…. Oh well, Ireland here we come!
So while I am off jet setting off to a new country, our country will surely be settling into the news of today. I can only hope that Obama will be the breath of fresh air our country desperately needs right now, because I feel like we have been gasping for air for far too long. Time to be positive, look to the future and have some faith. In the end, no one knows what would have been if this or that had happened, so we might as well embrace the choices made and move forward with a smile. Being angry – what’s the point. It’s over now, so let the calm spread. It’s a new day for our country, a day we should find hope in, a day we should embrace – a day that is far from ordinary, and for that alone, we should be thankful.
Love and hugs,
Jenny
